SIlvertip Resort Wedding in Canmore Alberta

Rachel & Rich’s wedding at Silvertip Resort in Canmore was overflowing with emotion and good times. It was also a truly spectacular celebration of 17 years of love! These two have been together for as many years and their strong connection shows in their playfulness and affection.

Rich started off the weekend fun with a round of golf with his VIP guys at the beautiful Silvertip Resort. Couldn’t ask for a better way to spend the afternoon before the big day!

I met these two at Rich’s brothers wedding several years back so when they touched base with me to photograph their wedding as well I was more than thrilled! They are both kind, fun and easy going.

I was lucky enough to be a part of this couple’s beautiful & fun wedding day in June. It was an incredible celebration from beginning to end! Tonia and Chris’ special day was an elegantly urban affair. Their venues merged the best of what Edmonton has to offer with their ceremony taking place at the modern Winspear Center and their reception being held at the Windermere Golf and Country Club in the heart of the city’s beautiful river valley. We also incorporated YEG’s downtown core in their wedding photos.

I’ve been looking forward to this couple’s wedding since their engagement session. They suggested we shoot at the then brand new Roger’s Place. I might risk a guess they were the first couple to have photos done there. That’s when I knew these two were one of a kind!

Meghan & Chad’s retro engagement session in Whitecourt Alberta was so much fun to shoot! They brought their gorgeous retro orange Ford as well as so many fun props: Coca-cola, poodle skirts, records and old cameras (Meghan is also an amazing photographer)! It was so great to get to know these two, hear about their love story and spend a beautiful summer evening out in the country!

Had such a great engagement session with Avery & Cam this spring. They are an incredibly fun and one of a kind couple and it was such a pleasure to get to know them better.  I also got to meet their pup Hobbs with his larger than life personality! It was adorable to watch him happily carry around this stick which was twice his size.

I’ve known Alissa & Erik for a few years now after getting to know them at mutual friends’ destination wedding. I instantly got the vibe that they were very kind, sincere and fun loving.   I was absolutely thrilled when they got engaged and asked me to capture their Canmore wedding at Cornerstone Theatre! Alissa & Erik both love the mountains and they spend a lot of time in Canmore so it was the perfect setting for them to say their vows. They are such an incredible couple and I am so glad we got to be a part of their romantic and relaxed day!

Emily & Tony. Millcreek Engagement session.

black and photo of couples walking in ravine during Millcreek engagement session

Emily and Tony are super sweet and playful together. They easily made each other laugh and chatted throughout our session. Often they were in their own world or sharing a private joke as I shot. Which suited me perfectly as I enjoyed catching a giggle from Emily and the twinkle in Tony’s eye when he looked at her.

It also made their Millcreek engagement session a lot of fun!  I really enjoyed spending the evening with these two and getting to know them a bit better. We had to reschedule a few times in April due to the weather however we finally got a beautiful evening.

The Oilers had a great run this year and these two got a chance to see a couple play-off games together! So cool!

Kind Words. Edmonton Wedding Photographer.

Edmonton wedding photographer

2016 was an amazing year for me and it is all thanks to my wonderful couples! As an Edmonton wedding photographer one of the best parts of my job is hearing how happy my couples are after they get their photos back! Their kind words fill me with such gratitude and remind me how lucky I am to be able to document their love. Here are just some of those testimonials from this past year.

wedding party hangs out in a pub in Edmonton

“We had Lauren capture our fall wedding in October 2016. We had been referred to Lauren by a family member and we absolutely loved her! From our first meeting, to engagement session, to wedding day we could not have asked for a better experience. Lauren was extremely professional and easy to work with. She pays close attention to details such as centering photos, capturing unique angles/moments, and incorporating architecture/landscapes into the photos- which was something we got a lot of compliments on and really appreciated! Lauren was sure to get all the photos on our wedding day that we had requested, and provided us with just the right amount of direction which made the day run smoothly and put us at ease. We ended up getting an unexpected snow fall the weekend of our wedding and Lauren was very helpful in keeping us calm, and managing to capture photos that we didn’t even think would be possible! We were so happy with the final results and the ability to have access to our photos at the end (and in great time!). Her pricing is also extremely competitive for the quality of photo and the time you get to spend with her and her second shooter, which is another reason we went with her. We were sad when the day was over, but are hoping we can come up with another excuse to work with Lauren again in the future! Highly recommend her photography!”

“The search for our wedding photographer was quite strenuous. Meeting many amazing photographers made the choice very difficult until we met Lauren. After our meeting with her we knew she would be the one to capture our special day. Our engagement session with Lauren went perfect! We were worried about how comfortable we would feel in front of the camera. Arnold and I aren’t the type of people who love to get their photos taken but Lauren made us feel at ease and we ended up having a blast! After our engagement session we were so excited to see the work she would do for our wedding. Having our wedding in the fall was something we wanted but we were very nervous about the weather. Sure enough, the forecast called for rain on our day. Lauren immediately opened the channel of discussion for indoor venues and gave us many suggestions. Luckily, the weather cleared up shortly after our ceremony although it was freezing. Lauren braved the cold with our wedding party to take some incredible shots. You can truly feel her passion for photography and it definitely shows in the results. We cannot thank Lauren enough for all the special moments she captured for us on the most important day of our lives. We will treasure those captured moments forever. We will always highly recommend Lauren. Her work is amazing, but once you met her, you’ll see how she stands out among the rest. ”

“Booking Lauren Hannah as our photographer was definitely the best decision we made regarding our wedding. She was great with communication, was tremendously helpful with choosing locations, makes you feel comfortable when taking photos, but most of all, Lauren made the experience fun for us. She takes extremely beautiful photos that we love; we were so blessed to have such an amazing person capture our wedding day for us!”

“I would 100% recommend Lauren. She is professional, flexible, fun and takes such beautiful and candid photos. One great feature is that she offers longer hours than most photographers, which was great so we could capture every moment of our special day. She is so very talented. We honestly could not have chosen a better person as our engagement and wedding photographer.”

“I had found Lauren on wedding wire and her 5 star reviews do not lie. What I loved about Lauren’s photos from other couples were those honest little moments that she caught and I did not think she would fit into our budget. Needless to say I was thrilled when I found out that she would.

She stayed with us all day starting with us getting ready to the dance where she caught some really great memories. When I had met with her I told her how important it was for us to get candid shots between us and with our friends and family. She did not disappoint and when we got our pictures back I was actually shocked at how many of our guests she managed to capture, things that we would not have seen otherwise. She took some really lovely formals as well and the great part was it wasn’t awkward posing for our pictures. When I look back at our pictures now I see the story that she was able to tell and the magic from our wedding day will forever live on in them. She truly became a part of our day along with her second shooters. Not only is Lauren a professional she is a great person to be around and an especially calming presence for a bride.”

“Lauren was our wedding and engagement photographer this year for our Fall wedding. We loved working with her and loved the results from both sessions. She was so easy to get along with and just great to work with all around. We’ve had so many compliments on our photos and we have only posted a few so far! The photography was one of the top things on my list as when you look back in years to come the photos are what really keep the memories of that day alive. We’re so happy we went with Lauren and would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone looking for an amazing Edmonton wedding photographer!”

Fun Edmonton Wedding photographer

Jessica & Tim’s purple and orange themed fall wedding at the University of Alberta Faculty Club was romantic, fun and all around amazing! On a beautifully warm fall day these two were married under a golden tree outside on the grounds at the University. Jessica & Tim are elegant, bright, adventurous and so in love! Being able to capture their fun and relaxed wedding day was such a pleasure.

Robin & Mark’s wedding at the Italian Culture Centre was a total blast! It was so great to be able to celebrate with this amazing couple. I’ve been looking forward to their wedding ever since the incredible engagement session/fun hike I did with them in Jasper!

Love this moment: as Robin was getting dressed by the window her Groom Mark was walking downstairs in the parking lot. Robin didn’t want to see Mark before they had their first look!

Jasper engagement session on Wilcox Pass Hike

I met Robin & Mark in Jasper for an amazing engagement session in the mountains! This Jasper engagement session was epic! We started the session by hiking the beautiful Wilcox Pass near Columbia Ice Fields to get to some amazing views and gorgeous landscape. Robin and Mark were engaged on this very hike on recent camping trip so this spot is not only beautiful but has special meaning to them as a couple. It was so great to hear about their engagement story and relive that with them as we hiked the very same spots they had on that special day.

So glad I was able to photograph Darby & Jared’s wedding at La Cite Francophone earlier this summer; the day was perfect beginning to end. From the relaxed morning to the intimate ceremony and the fun filled wedding reception. Darby and Jared are sweet, stylish and fun. Plus… so in love! It’s amazing to photograph a couple with such a beautiful connection and who are head over heels for each other.

Also because of the gorgeous June weather (it was a super hot day) we got to take advantage of the lovely courtyard. I love outdoor ceremonies!

Where were the photos taken of the couple against the vine wall? Such a stunning photo!

Why choose full day wedding coverage? Edmonton Wedding Photographer.

black and white portrait by Edmonton Wedding Photographer

I always encourage couples to book full day coverage with their wedding photographer. In fact, all my packages include 12 hours. Of course there are some couples who only need partial day coverage, but for most weddings, I believe full day coverage is the best option because it allows your wedding photographer to capture the entire story of your wedding day from start to finish. It also gives you more flexibility and allows for greater spontaneity in how the day unfolds. Here are three reasons why I think choosing a full day wedding package is so valuable:

bride and groom cuddle on steps

1. Tell the story of your wedding day!

mother admires her daughter on her wedding day

On the day of the wedding, I prefer to start when the couple is getting ready and to shoot well into the reception. This way, when you look back on your wedding photos, you will remember the day as a whole, from beginning to end. By the time the bride and groom are getting ready for their big day, my work is already well underway. I love being there to capture those special and intimate moments that take place before the ceremony. The morning is also a great time to capture detail shots of items such a jewelry and clothing, and it’s always a lot of fun to see close friend and family interacting before the big event.

2. Reception photos that rock!

Edmonton wedding reception photo

While some photographers might finish shooting after the first dance or when the formal reception program is complete, I prefer to stay well into the night. Some of the best photos come after guest start to loosen up and participate in the reception. We are able to get some great candids of guests dancing, laughing, interacting and celebrating with you!

Having more coverage at the reception allowed us the capture this Bride’s Ukrainian dance group taking part in the tradition of dancing the Kolomeyka!

3. More time to get all the photos you want!

Like these images with the Bride’s beloved horse during her wedding in Chauvin.

Edmonton wedding photographer captures the bride with her horse

I always recommend that couples create a timeline for their wedding day and that it allows for at least two hours for portraits. With full day wedding coverage we will have more time for all the photos that you want to take, including candids, portraits, family photos, reception coverage and everything in between. Having your wedding photographer around for the whole day means not only that you will have more time to schedule in everything that is important to you, but also that there will be more “wiggle room” in terms of how the day unfolds, meaning more time for you to really enjoy the day!

5 Reasons to do an Engagement Shoot. Edmonton Engagement Session Photographer.

Engagement shoots are one my favourite types of sessions to photograph because it allows me to get to know my couple better, make them feel more comfortable in front of the camera and they are are a lot of fun. I always encouraged my clients to book an engagement session with me and here are some of the reasons why I feel it is a really important investment!

Reasons to do an engagement session with your wedding photographer:

nighttime Edmonton engagement session

You can see Leah & Brendan’s urban Edmonton engagement session here!

1. It’s a great way to connect with your photographer and to help them get to know you better.

An engagement session allows your photographer to get to know you as a couple which can in turn create more personal images and all around better photos on the wedding day. You’ll also get to know your photographer and get a sense of how they shoot! On the wedding day it will be like having a friend show up to take photos!

If it’s a winter shoot I’ll make you do snow angels!

couple plays in snow during edmonton engagement session

We can even grab a coffee together during the shoot 🙂

2. Get comfortable in front of the camera!

If you’ve never been photograph by a professional photographer you may be unsure of what to expect. The engagement session helps to get those nerves out of the way before the big day. Most of my couples remark after the shoot that they thought they would feel really awkward and stiff but that in fact they felt comfortable, relaxed and had a great time with us. I love hearing that!

Nothing is more chill than hanging in a hammock. I climbed a tree for this shot!

Kirk & Ryan’s session was super modern and fun!

3. Celebrate your engagement.

It’s an exciting time and why not document that before you are married? You’ll also be able to use these images on your save-the-dates and invitations. Plus, getting photos done in more casual clothes means you’ll get a different, less formal set of photos to look back on! I try to make my sessions like a date night out but with a photographer. In fact, when couples ask me what to wear that’s exactly what I tell them: something they would wear on a date night together.

Mary and Jason’s  downtown Edmonton engagement session was so romantic!

See more of this sunset shoot here!

4.  More flexibility.

On the wedding date we may be limited by time and geography. Engagement sessions can be done at different locations that are special to the couple. I’ve done shoots at family farms in the country, in the mountains and other special spots that were sentimental to the couple. These are places we may not have been able to go to on the wedding day. Of course, there are also a ton of amazing spots for an Edmonton engagement session !

We personalized Stephanie & William’s shoot by incorporating his motorcycles!

Erika & Andrew had their first date at Remedy Cafe so we included it in the shoot (before indulging in some chai lattes)!

night shot for edmonton engagement shoot

Another consideration is that on the wedding day we may be limited for time. During the engagement session we have more flexibility in terms of the amount of locations we can go to.

Edmonton engagement session in Millcreek park

5. This is a great day do your makeup trial.

If you’re planning on doing a make-up trial you might consider booking it for the same day as your engagement session. That way you are able to see how your makeup will photograph on the wedding day.

5 reasons to do a First Look on your wedding day!

A “First look” or “Reveal” is when a couple meets privately before their ceremony, thus breaking with the tradition of not seeing each other until the actual I do’s. For some couples, not seeing each other before the ceremony is really important. However, for others a First Look is a really great opportunity to get some wonderful images, have a special moment together, and streamline their wedding timeline/schedule. I’m always excited when couples tell me that they’re considering doing a First Look because I absolutely love photographing them!

Here are my top 5 reasons for doing a first look:

1. A First Look makes for beautiful photographs

First looks are emotional and beautiful. I love the look of delighted, surprised or teary-eyed smiles that appear on bride and groom’s faces when they do a reveal. Those are incredible moments to photograph! I also I don’t think it ruins that moment of seeing your spouse-to-be walk down the aisle. I’ve seen brides and grooms cry at both the first look and then again at the ceremony! There’s tons of excitement in that moment even after doing a First Look.

Groom cries during First Look on his wedding day

Leah and Brendan’s Reveal makes my heart melt

groom is emotional during reveal with his bride-to-be

2. Streamlining your timeline

By doing a First Look we are often able to get a chunk of photos done before the ceremony. That way you can have your cocktail hour or reception immediately after or very soon after the ceremony. Not only does this simplify your timeline, but it also makes it so that guests aren’t left wondering what to do in the hours in between the ceremony and reception.

Love the fact that Kirk & Ryan decided to do a First Look

Same-Sex couple sees each other before ceremony

Two Groom see each other before their same-sex wedding

3. You get to share a moment just the two of you before saying “I do”

Often with the hustle and bustle of the day, couples barely get a moment to themselves. Doing a First Look is a chance to be together and share your excitement before the ceremony. Of course there’s the photographer and second shooter there as well, but I promise we’ll give you space and time to just have a minute to yourselves.

groom cries as he sees his bride on their wedding day

This reveal was so sweet

groom cries when he sees his bride-to-be at their reveal

groom kisses bride's hand

4. It’s a chance to see each other all dressed up for the first time in a more intimate way

Sometimes with the anticipation of walking down the aisle you don’t get a chance to really take in the scene and appreciate the moment. The first look is more intimate in that sense. That is also why I always recommend that the First Look be done with just the bride and groom not with the bridal party or family present.

This was one of my favourite moments from Jayme & Kevin’s wedding day

Bride and groom share a first look on their wedding day

5. Your photos are done before the ceremony

With many of your photos done before the ceremony you’ll have more time to relax and fully enjoy the ceremony and reception. Awesome, right?

First look during winter wedding

We did Jon & Michelle‘s reveal in one of the couple’s favourite spots

winter wedding first look

Of course all that being said, the First Look is not for everyone. For some couples they’d rather not see each other until the ceremony. Each couple is unique and each wedding should be a reflection of that.

p.s. There are also some fun alternatives to First Looks such as doing a Reveal with your bridesmaids or parents before the ceremony.

Bandana the Dog. Rescue Dog Story.

FunEdmontonWeddingPhotographer

For those of you that follow me on social media, you know that my rescue dog Bandana is very close to my heart and a big part of my life. And if you do follow me on social media, I apologize because you’ve been bombarded with photos of him almost daily! However, Bandana came into my life unexpectedly and because it is his birthday, or rather his “adoption day,” today I thought I would share the story of how he came to Canada and, well, came to live with me.

rescue dog wear bandana and birthday hat

There was still snow on the ground last March because, similar to what happened this year, in Edmonton we were “Blessed” with a second winter. My lucky sister was on vacation in Nicaragua and one day I got a phone call from her all teary and upset. She told me there was a dog there who had been following her around and how sweet he was. She has two dogs herself so it broke her heart to see this dog without a home. Of course I was sympathetic. Being a huge animal lover it always pains me to see that too. But I didn’t expect her to ask “well, will you take him?” I was a little shocked that she suggested that I bring this dog all the way from Central America to Canada but at the same time I felt I couldn’t say no.

rescue dog living in Nicaragua

Of course she said she would have to find this dog again tomorrow if she wanted to, in fact, rescue him. She had met somebody who could put her in contact with the local rescue group but that it would be her job to actually catch him in order to start the process of taking him home. It all hung on whether she could actually find him the next day before she had to board the ferry in order to catch a flight to another island.

A rescue dog walks up path

Fast forward to the next afternoon and I get a text from her saying that she had lost him and that she would now have to head to the ferry without him. That’s when I knew I really wanted him deep down inside because my heart sank. Even though I haven’t even seen a picture of him he already felt like he was my dog. Lo and behold with literally minutes to spare before they have to catch the ferry they managed to slip the leash around him. Well, I can’t say a leash — it was just a piece of rope. So began the long and treacherous process of bringing him to Canada. It started with a visit to the vet followed by ferry ride and a very long flight all the way from Nicaragua.

rescue dog wearing a red bandana walks on log

When he finally did arrive we had to pick him up from a huge cargo building and he was visibly traumatized from not only a long journey but then being stuck in this loud echoey building in a crate. At home he kept making these little whining sounds once we had taken him out of the crate. We thought he was quite upset or confused but now we know that this is his way of talking to us and telling us that he is extremely happy. It’s pretty funny.

rescue dog lays on dog bed

A few weeks after we got him we discovered another one of his quirks. One evening I found him in a hamper that was on the floor with a few towels in it. I thought that was pretty hilarious. Little did I know that he would take up this hamper as his permanent place and that he would literally sleep in it every night.

Here is a photo (taken on my phone) of him in smiling in his hamper.

rescue dog sleep in hamper

From the very beginning he came with an array of medical problems that we didn’t know about until he arrived. This included finding out that he had a cancerous lump on his foot. We thought he was done for but he has strived through all the challenges and came out on the other end. He is also a very timid guy and so there is lots of work ahead with training which has been, in fact, a lot of fun (I am a big nerd for agility and dog training).

rescue dog stands on top of mountain

It’s been stressful and not cheap and some people may not understand sticking with it but this little guy has stolen my heart and become my best friend, running partner, and the source of a lot of laughter. I love the quote that says ‘Until one has loved an animal a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”

Lisa & Mark. Engagement Session at La Cité Francophone.

Couple is silhouetted with dramatic clouds

Lisa and Mark’s engagement session at La Cité Francophone was an incredibly fun time. I had these guys climbing up hills of ice, trekking through mud and laying on the wet ground all without one complaint from them. It was so great to spend the afternoon with them and get to know them better!

engaged couple is reflected in water

What was supposed to be a winter photo shoot was more like a spring session with the amazing weather we had this past March. So we ended up spending a ton of time outside before finishing up the engagement session at La Cité Francophone.

Lisa and Mark wanted to do part of the engagement session at La Cité Francophone because they are huge coffee lovers and love the café they have there.

It was warm enough that they had the fire going and we could enjoy some lattes outside on the patio!

The couple also brought some cute props to the shoot including their Oilers Jerseys. This is a fun way to personalize the engagement session.

I am beyond excited to share this gorgeous fall wedding on the blog. From the very first moment to the reception at Windermere Golf Club it was romantic, pretty, fun and gushing with emotion. Mary and Jason were married on a cool day in early October. It might have been a chilly one but these two kept each other warm all day long. They are so adorable together and have so much love for each other !

I had the pleasure of photographing Jasse & Amar’s beautiful Indian wedding this July… and what a ride. Their week long wedding was full of energy, colour, excitement, family and lots of of love (not to mention a ton a good partying!) This will be one of my longest blog posts ever. There are just too many amazing moments I couldn’t bare to leave any of these photos out!

Jayme & Kevin. Edmonton Faculty Club Wedding.

Jayme & Kevin’s wedding day was perfect from beginning to end…from the first look to the reception at Edmonton Faculty Club. It was a beautiful early summer day with just enough warmth,  just enough clouds and whole lot of pretty light and colours. These two are a great couple and an amazing match. The day flowed in such a relaxed and fun manner all thanks to their personalities and the way they are together.

The ceremony and reception were held at the lovely Edmonton Faculty Club. One of my favourite places to photograph weddings. There is beautiful light in from big windows and a lovely fireplace where the bride and groom said their vows. This ceremony was really sweet especially when the couple told each other (and their guests) what their favourite things about the other was.

Ben & Alwin. Toronto Wedding photography. Hart House Wedding.

Ben and Alwin’s wedding day was one of the most fun and memorable I’ve had the pleasure of photographing. A day full of very personal touches, a ton of love, a few happy tears and a lot of laughter. It was a true celebration of family and the couple’s partnership. I am so happy that I got to be a part of such a beautiful day. Hopefully I have created some images that help Ben and Alwin remember this special time in their relationship for years to come.

From the start the day was laid back and relaxed. The couple got ready together along with their brothers. A chance to capture intimate moments shared between the couple as well as the strong connection shared between them and their brothers.

We took the subway to the wedding which made for a fun backdrop for photos. Ben and Alwin stopped along the way to put up signs leading the wedding guests to the reception site. Each brightly coloured sign read “Uncle Ben & Uncle Alwin’s Wedding”. The signs were made by the couple’s nieces and nephews.

The wedding ceremony was held at St. Paul’s Church in downtown Toronto, a beautiful historic building. Family was a big part of the wedding day. Ben’s sister led the beautiful wedding service.

After the ceremony the wedding guests were led by Ben and Alwin for a short walk through downtown Toronto to the reception site which was at the Hart House on the University of Toronto campus.

Lauren, these are very beautiful wedding photos and you’ve captured some very special moments!! The photo in which the guests are walking to Hart House behind the Faculty of Music brought back memories of Eve’s years at the U of T.
